The City of Greeley's historic Plum Farm grows pumpkins for the brewery.
Jeff and his boys were watching a pumpkin shooting contest on TV, and he thought it was a waste of the pumpkins. We should put those in a beer.
Working with Harris seeds, Jeff looked at all the different pie pumpkins and grew several kinds that seasons in his backyard, trying different varieties to find the right combination of flavor. After a season of testing and tasting, we came to two pumpkin varieties in a ratio of 70:30--Crabtree's proprietary blend of real pumpkins.
When you go to all that trouble to find just the right combination of pumpkin types, you don't just through allspice into the beer. We hand-grind nutmeg, cinnamon, and cardamon in a mortar and pestle and add it all to the boil. The brewery smells like pumpkin pie when its brewing.
After three years of growing pumpkins in Jeff's backyard, we outsourced the growing to a local CSA. When the CSA moved to Loveland, Plum Farm took over the growing process (the CSA still takes our pumpkins from seed to seedlings before transferring the plants to Plum Farm). In order to get our pumpkin beer into your hands by September 15th, seeds are started in a greenhouse in late January, and the plants are planted when they are almost a foot tall in mid May. If you are getting pumpkin beer before mid-September, it isn't made with real pumpkin.
Leftover pumpkins are donated to the local food bank.
We roast the 3,000lbs of pumpkins in two commercial ovens owned by Wing Shack across the street. At midnight, we start roasting pumpkins, and by the time the first Wing Shack employees show up for work in the morning we are cleaned up and brewing.
It takes a village to make our Chunkin' Pumpkin. It only takes you to enjoy it.
Our Serenity meets sweet and savory with this scrumptious seasonal beer. Real CSA locally grown pumpkins are baked, chunked and thrown directly into the mash tun with a cornucopia of spices. Perfect on a fall day when the leaves begin to change. Loving this beer is as easy as pie!
